The best laksa in town?

In all seriousness, I don’t know how anyone could resist a sumptuously delicious bowl of laksa from Rendevous Café?
As far as I am concerned it is the granddaddy of laksas in a city that has many “Best Laksas in Town“.
That’s not to say it’s the oldest or past it’s time, this one has had staying power for many years.
Darwin locals have considered it the best bowl of spicy, curry coconutty goodness for as long as I can remember.

So does it still hold up?…Absolutely! I personally enjoy the spice blend and the thickness of the soup. There are all kinds of variations from chicken, beef, vegetarian and my favourite chicken and BBQ pork. The Rendezvous staff are very accommodating for such a busy little place. I remember a previous colleague of mine even got them to make up a lamb laksa – crazy Kiwi that she was! All jokes aside…even the lamb laksa tasted good.

I think the key to their success is that they have never changed the recipe – you will always get the same bowl of soup each time you go – locals expect it and the Rendezvous staff deliver it, hence the line up every lunchtime. It’s a great first-timer laksa too… I can’t tell you how many people I have introduced this awesome soup to, spice and chilli phobics included, all of them coming away completely satisfied and eager to come back for another taste.

I must say though the one thing that makes me REALLY enjoy the ‘Rendezvous experience’ is their perfect accompaniment to their famous soup – one of their home made lemon iced teas. Served with some sugar syrup so you can adjust it to your own taste, this tasty beverage is exquisitely refreshing! Plus it takes the bite away for those of us over zealous types that ask for extra chili :-) The only drawback is that it goes down too well – I’m always caught out with an empty glass before my soup arrives!

So I guess what I’m saying is, as far as I’m concerned, the Rendezvous Café is still the best laksa in town!

If you haven’t tried it, give it a go, you’ll enjoy every mouthful!

:-)

Totally rockin' ice tea

    That’s not a laksa, it’s curry noddle.

I agree – I’ve been eating it as regularly as i can since moving here in 1995 and I have also regularly tasted any other laksa i can find. you are right:
    1. it is always consistently good!
    2. perfect accompanied by ice lemon tea
    3. It is real laksa … not just a random spicy coconut soup ‘called’ laksa.

My belief is that Cafe Rendezvous laksa is best because it is as good as any you would find in the home of Laksa – Malaysia. It is original Malaysian curry laksa made with good fresh rempah.
it is not the Thai or pan-asian style ersatz laksa found widely in Darwin (which is usually just chill iflavoured coconut soup often made with a paste from a jar.

The comment below shows the naivete of one who has eaten too many of the common market and food court variety of laksa.

keep up the good food reportage. I love the fresh look at what I have known as the food centre of the country – if not the world – for the last 16 years of my life.

I recommend you try the laksa at Lisa’s Lunch Bar in Winnellie. Voted superior to Rendezvous by many a gaming geek on the gamers underground forums.

Mission accepted. Any of you fella’s play Starcraft 2?

LOL my boyfriend and I take opposing sides here. I am Rendezvbouz all the way and he just adores Lisa’s Laksa. I have had to it also – and truthfully I would put it second to Rendezvous but above all the rest I have tried in Darwin (most places). A little too thick with a too much noodle for me.

  • Laksa freak

I love th wharf. But that’s just me. There chicken noodle soup is pretty good too.
